Description

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Far more than a superb memoir about the highest levels of professional tennis, Open is the engrossing story of a remarkable life.

Andre Agassi had his life mapped out for him before he left the crib. Groomed to be a tennis champion by his moody and demanding father, by the age of twenty-two Agassi had won the first of his eight grand slams and achieved wealth, celebrity, and the game’s highest honors. But as he reveals in this searching autobiography, off the court he was often unhappy and confused, unfulfilled by his great achievements in a sport he had come to resent. Agassi writes candidly about his early success and his uncomfortable relationship with fame, his marriage to Brooke Shields, his growing interest in philanthropy, and—described in haunting, point-by-point detail—the highs and lows of his celebrated career.

Simply written and honest recollection of a competitor’s life. It’s an easy read, gets a bit predictable toward the end.

What an extraordinarily moving story. It is well told, has tension, and is hard to put down. You just want to see what happens next. You just want to see how Andre will grow and evolve, and turn from hating tennis to loving it. This is an inspiring book; it is timeless and speaks to the human-ness of anyone who seeks to find him/herself.

This book is one I want to read and then read again. I love the title, the honesty, the voice of confidence and humility - the contradictions!
  • Epic Story, Unkind at Times...

Very well written, fascinating story. I got a little tired of in depth details on tennis matches and thought he was a little too unkind to Brooke and Sampras, making many unnecessary low blows that didn’t really add anything to his story. Do I *need* to know that Pete Sampras didn’t tip well at restaurants and how empty/vacuous Brooke’s Hollywood life and friends seemed to him? I don’t feel like he took the high road with comments like those. Otherwise a fantastic story and I highly recommend.

I enjoyed hearing about Andre’s growth from being a self-absorbed tennis phenom to a caring grownup who put others needs above his own. Most never make that transition. Captivating story.
